Listed Building Roof & Façade Repairs — London

Conservation-led repairs for Grade I, Grade II* and Grade II buildings. Traditional materials, traditional details, minimal visual impact during the works — and full coordination with your conservation officer or architect.

Right Materials, Right Detail, Right Specification

Listed buildings demand specifications that contemporary contractors are rarely set up for. A modern cement pointing on a soft Victorian stock will trap moisture and damage the brick faces. A modern asphalt repair on a lead gutter will fail aesthetically and short-cycle the surrounding lead.

Our work on heritage properties uses materials and details consistent with the original — hot-mixed lime mortars, traditional lead bossing, sand-cast nails, riven slate and natural stone matched by quarry where possible.

Where consent is required, we coordinate with your conservation architect or directly with the local authority's conservation officer to provide method statements, materials samples and photographs that support a Listed Building Consent application.

Rope access is often a positive factor in consent: it removes the need for a full scaffold structure that might otherwise require advertisement consent, neighbour notification, pavement licensing and visual disruption to a sensitive setting.

Traditional Trades We Carry Out at Height

Lime Mortar Repointing

Hot-mixed and natural hydraulic lime mortars, matched in colour and aggregate to the original. Joints raked, brushed and finished traditionally.

Lead Work

Cast and milled lead to LSA codes. Bossing, soldered seams, traditional fixings and dressings to flashings, valleys and parapets.

Slate & Clay Tile

Welsh and Westmorland slate, hand-made clay tiles. Nibbed and pegged fixings, sourced to match the original where extant.

Stone Repair

Indents, dutchman repairs and lime-based stone repairs (mortar repairs) for Portland, Bath, York and other London limestones and sandstones.

Cast Iron Rainwater Goods

Repair, refurbishment and reinstatement of cast iron gutters, hoppers and downpipes. Hand-painted finishes; original profiles retained.

Conservation Inspections

Quinquennial-style condition inspections for trustees, charities and PCCs — written reports suitable for grant applications.

Working Within Listed Building Consent

1

Like-for-Like Repairs

Most genuine like-for-like repairs do not require Listed Building Consent. We document our materials and methods so the file justifies the position if challenged.

2

Application Support

When consent is needed, we provide method statements, materials samples and elevation photographs to support the application.

3

Conservation Officer Liaison

Where requested by the local authority, we attend with the conservation officer on site and adapt the specification before going to scale.

Lighter on the Building, Lighter on the Setting

No Anchored Scaffold

No tied-in scaffold means no penetrations into historic stone, brick or render. Existing fabric is preserved.

Visual Setting Preserved

No scaffold visible in the conservation area for weeks at a time — important for properties opposite Grade I-listed neighbours, churches and gardens.

Faster Mobilisation

No scaffold design lead time, no licensing delays. Smaller-scope works can complete in days rather than weeks.
